Chapter Seven

Victoria’s fingers slowed on the keyboard and her head drifted forward. She jerked her head upright and started typing again. A minute later, the typing stopped again and her eyes slid closed.

“If you aren’t careful, you’re going to fall out of that chair.”

Her eyes snapped open and she whipped her head around to see Gail standing in the doorway with her arms folded and a frown on her face.

“Late night?”

“Something like that.” Michael had left her condo well after one in the morning and she’d awakened before six aching for his touch.

“I hope you weren’t up worrying about the lab.”

The lab? “Oh. No, I wasn’t.” She hid a yawn behind her hand and blinked rapidly to clear the moisture from her eyes.

Gail crossed the room and propped a hip against the desk and studied Victoria. “How are things with you and Mr. Avery?”

Victoria felt her face warm.

“So, he’s the reason you can’t stay awake.” She lowered her voice conspiratorially. “By the blush on your face, it looks like he was worth ever second of those dark circles under your eyes.”

One night with Michael was worth much more. The man knew his way around a woman’s body and she couldn’t be happier. “We went out to dinner, and then he was kind enough to quiz me on a few topics.”

“I may be on the other side of fifty, but a chemistry quiz isn’t going to make you tired. From the first time he came in here, the sparks were flying between you two. You’re like a couple of chemicals. The temperature rises and the reaction accelerates. And you know what happens next. Boom!” She made a gesture of an explosion with her hands.

She knew exactly what Gail meant. And what an explosion. He’d wanted to know what effects his touch and kiss had on her. Now he knew… and so did everybody else. She’d screamed so loud it was a wonder one of her neighbors hadn’t knocked on the door. The feel of his hand gliding over her body, the heat of his mouth on her…

Gail laughed. “Girl, those must be some memories.”

The sound of Gail’s voice broke into her lustful thoughts. “I don’t think we should be having this conversation. I need to finish this report.”

“If you keep falling into the keyboard, that report may not get finished until Monday.”

“I’m fine. I just need a little break.” Victoria glanced over at the wall clock. “And it’s almost lunch time anyway.”

“Mmm hmm…”

She stood. “I’m going to pick up something from The Sandwich Spot. Do you want something?”

“Yes. I have a menu out front.”

She called in their orders and drove over. On the way back, her cell rang. She pushed a button and engaged the car’s Bluetooth. “Hello.”

“Good afternoon, sweet lady. How are you feeling?”

Just the sound of Michael’s voice made her breasts tingle. “Beyond tired,” she said with a laugh. “But in a good way.”

Michael joined in her laughter. “I hear you. I had to break down and get one of those energy drinks, otherwise I wouldn’t make it through the day.
